The liturgy of the word invites us to keep up the words and instructions we have received from our parents and value the lessons we have learnt from them.
In the first reading, Jacob instructs his children to keep up his instructions and, in the gospel, we see the genealogy of Jesus where we come across not only holy people but also sinners. This shows us that God loves every one of us.
Sometimes we may feel proud or ashamed to speak about our parents and great grandparents depending on the life they lived, but we should not bother much about it because we all belong to a limited human race. All of us are naturally curious to some extent to know the world better.
In order to appease our curious mind, we feed our mind with information from academia, newspaper, magazines, social media and other various means. Further, we undergo special training to enhance our skills and talents. Yes, of course by doing all these things, we are trying to become a better version of ourselves. However, at times, we totally neglect and ignore what we have learnt from our parents.
Though some of our parents have no degree certificates, they are intelligent and experts in some areas. We feel embarrassed to learn from them, thinking that what we learn from them may not be useful and we want to learn modern ways of doing things. We are wrong to think so. Let us not forget the roots we come from, and keep up the instructions of our parents as guiding principles of our life.
