Strive to do Good, Seek Justice

In the first reading of the day, we hear, “Learn to do good, seek justice, discipline the violent, be just to the orphan, plead for the widow.”

However, we hear something seemingly opposite in the gospel. Jesus, the Prince of Peace, says that he has come to bring division. But Jesus is not speaking about war or physical conflict; he is asking us to detach from our close relationships if they hinder our discipleship. To be his disciple, this is the first step we need to take. On the other hand, we will experience criticism and harsh words from others because we follow Jesus. Above all, we need to give priority to God and learn to do good, or in simple terms, put into practice the values of the Kingdom of God.

In doing so, we become radical followers of Jesus in our daily lives. As Pope Francis reminds us, “The word of God is alive and powerful, capable of bringing about a radical transformation in those who hear it and respond.” Jesus, in a way, speaks about the power of his word and the reward for those who follow it. Not only should we hear the word of God, but we should also live it in our lives. When we do good, we will be rewarded for our deeds.

Pope Francis also says, “A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not a Christian.” Let us strive to do good, seek justice, and be merciful, building bridges of love and compassion in our communities.
