Take Steps to Seek Him Earnestly

Readings: Heb 7: 25-8:6; Mk 3: 7-12

In the gospel reading, the passion of the crowd to see Jesus is both inspiring and eye-opening. The crowd may have been drawn to Jesus because of the great works he performed and to satisfy their physical needs. However, their deep faith in Jesus as a healer and provider also motivated them to seek him.

Pope Francis once said, “It is the self interest that drives us to seek God, to solve problems, to have what we cannot obtain on our own, thanks to him.” The first reading reminds us that Jesus is always able to save those who approach God, since he lives forever to intercede for them. Today, the readings challenge me to reflect on my own faith. Do I turn to Jesus when I face difficulties and problems in life? Do I have the strong faith of those in the gospel, believing that even if I touch Jesus, I will be healed?

The people in the gospel travelled from far distances to see Jesus and be healed, and their deep faith and trust in him allowed them to receive what they sought. What keeps me from drawing closer to Jesus? Why do I sometimes feel I don’t receive blessings from God? The answer may lie in my shallow faith and lack of initiative to approach Jesus and ask for his help. The challenge is to strengthen my faith and take the steps to seek him earnestly.
