Today’s gospel reading reminds us that at every point of our lives we should all take time to repent for our wrongdoings. We all of us know that money and possessions we have here on earth are nothing when we die. Nobody knows when death will come to each of us so we must get ready. To be ready means to start repenting, to go back to God and ask for forgiveness for all the sins we committed till now. And we need to live our lives everyday according to the will of God.
The parable of the fig tree reminds us that God is patient. He still gives us time to bear good fruits. He always extends his mercy on us because of his love for humankind. When we get rooted in routine mundane activities, we fail to bear fruit. We cannot go on in that mode for long. We are accountable to someone; the master may come at any time.
Here the gardener is an intercessor, he takes upon himself the responsibility of bringing the fig tree to bear fruit. In our barrenness too, God sends people in different forms to help us. When somebody enters our life to suggest constructive changes, our duty is to cooperate in humility with the other in order to bring out the best in ourselves so that we may bear good fruits in our daily lives.
