The Annunciation: Nothing is Impossible for God

Readings: Is 9: 2-7; Lk 1:26-38

Today we celebrate the feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the first reading, we see Isaiah prophesying about the deep darkness in which the people of Israel are living. This darkness was the darkness of anguish and spiritual death.

Prophet Isaiah consoles the people of Israel saying that there will come a great light and they will suddenly see the light shine upon them. Because of this light, the people of Israel will experience
peace, blessing, and complete joy in their life.

Today’s gospel reading is the fulfillment of the prophecy of Isaiah. The angel Gabriel announced that Mary’s son would receive the throne of David. During the visitation, Elizabeth calls Mary, “Mother of my Lord.” Mary’s queenship is related to the kingship of Jesus. When Mary received the annunciation from angel Gabriel she might have been in shock for a moment, but later with faith, she accepted the will of God for her.

The annunciation conveys to us that nothing is impossible for God, and that God can do miracles as he did to Mother Mary. Our God is a God of possibilities and miracles.

Our God can make things happen for us as long as we have faith in him. In our religious life, when we go through troubles and hardships, we need to keep our faith in God, like Mother Mary in the gospel who fully trusted and believed in God’s word. Then he will show the way for us to walk because he is the guiding light for all Christians.
