Readings: Deut 30: 15-20; Lk 9:22-25
In today’s readings, both Moses and Jesus place before us the choices we need to make in our lives. There is no compelling, only an invitation to choose between life and death. God out of his love for us neither forces nor compels us. He just leaves in our freedom to choose. This is one of the gifts that God has given to us.
One thing we should remember is that both choices have their own consequences. Moses says “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil.” Jesus is asking us the same question. Are you ready to follow me? Before following Him, Jesus wants us to realize the challenges and the hardships that we may have to face in the journey of following him. But that is not the end, he gives us the assurance of the life eternal if we are to be firm in following him till the end.
To follow Jesus demands self-surrender and commitment to him so that we will not fall into the temptations of this world. This journey is a lifelong process that follows many challenges. But it depends on us on how we want to take it. The choice remains with us. Let us ask God to grant us the wisdom to choose life and the courage to follow His way. The season of Lent presents before us the opportunity to reflect on the choices that we make in our life.
God grant me the strength to follow You. Amen
