Readings: Ruth 2: 1-3, 8-11; 4: 13-17; Mt 23: 1-12
Today in the first reading we hear how God had planned for Ruth and Boaz to be together as husband and wife through whom a wonderful generation came into be. Ruth’s humility, dedication and faith in the God brought her divine blessing. She gave importance in living the truth.
In today’s gospel Jesus teaches us to live the truth by avoiding duplicities. Many of the contemporaries of Jesus were interested in imposing rules and regulations upon others. But they failed to lift a finger to ease the burden for the weak and heavy laden.
Sometimes like the Scribes and Pharisees we expect others to follow what we say or teach but refuse to cooperate with them to render service. We command, instead of making humble requests. We become upset and arrogant when things go wrong and expect others to be gentle and polite.
According to Jesus greatness is measured by service, not by earthly honor. One is not above or more exalted than the other. Each one is expected to serve and help the other. There is no room for pride or arrogance, nor for the love of position, honor, or title.
