Readings: Col 1:9-14; Lk 5:1-11
The gospel of the day presents us the call of the first disciples. We see three facts in this, they are- first, there was a contact with Jesus as the master. Second, obedience to the master’s word and the third, there was an unexpected result at the end. Let us look into ourselves and see.
Do we have these facts in us? Again we come to know that Jesus gives assurance to Peter not to be afraid and gives him the mission. As we celebrate today the feast of St. Teresa of Calcutta, Jesus tells us to take her example in being a disciple as she had “a call within a call” and responded to it through her service to the poor, sick and the needy. Am I able to recognize the call of God and respond to it in a unique way?
The call of Peter and the call of St. Teresa are similar- ‘the call within a call’. But there is difference for Peter. Jesus himself comes and directly reveals the call and promises him what is going to be. But for St. Teresa it was not so. The Spirit of God revealed to her the call through a sick man lying in the railway platform. The reading invites me to be alert in this present time to realize my call through different people in my society or in my community.
