Bandel: The Feast of the Holy Rosary was a profound and uplifting celebration held at Bandel Basilica in the Hooghly district of West Bengal on November 9 and 10, 2024. Pilgrims from near and far gathered in reverent unity to honor Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, transforming this annual event into a vibrant tapestry of faith, community, and spiritual depth. Devotees from diverse linguistic backgrounds—including local parishioners, aspirants, and neighboring villages—came together in a powerful expression of prayer and worship.

On Saturday evening at 5 p.m., the Most Rev. Thomas D’Souza, Archbishop of Kolkata, presided over the Eucharistic celebration. In his heartfelt homily centered on the theme of saying “YES” to God, he reflected on Mary’s pivotal “Fiat” at the Annunciation. The Archbishop inspired the congregation to embrace a similar openness in their lives, encouraging them to respond affirmatively to God’s call, extend compassion to those in need, and embark on a journey of personal faith that begins with Baptism and flourishes through each Sacrament. The liturgy was beautifully enriched by readings from diverse members of the community, with the Mothers’ Sodality leading the Prayer of the Faithful and the Ferrando hostel girls performing an offertory dance.

After the final Mass, a grand Eucharistic procession unfolded, led by seminarians, youth groups, and parishioners. The Blessed Sacrament was carried on a vehicle surrounded by flower girls, creating an atmosphere of reverence as pilgrims lined the streets, praying the Rosary and singing hymns in devotion. This orderly procession set a reflective tone that resonated deeply with all present as altar servers led the way with a cross and candles.

Devotees followed in procession behind the statue of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, honored by members of the Mothers’ Sodality, lay parishioners, youth groups, priests, and aspirants from Don Bosco Seminary along with other religious communities. Special hymns such as “Khristo Debota” filled the air, fostering a vibrant sense of unity among attendees. The Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament created a sacred moment for reflection as participants immersed themselves in the prayerful atmosphere cultivated by the Eucharistic celebration.

In an inspiring talk before the final benediction, Fr. Roshan Tirkey SJ emphasized Mary’s role as our Mother—given to us through St. John at Calvary—and reminded us that as her devoted children, we should honor her as our dearest Mother. Mrs. Agnes James, a Sunday Catechist, expressed heartfelt gratitude during her vote of thanks, acknowledging the tireless efforts of volunteers, religious sisters, and parish groups that contributed to making this event a spiritual triumph.

The liturgical program on Sunday, November 10th, showcased Masses in Hindi, Bengali, and English—reflecting the rich multicultural fabric of the congregation. The first service at 6:30 a.m. was conducted in Hindi, followed by a Bengali Mass at 9:00 a.m., presided over by Archbishop D’Souza during which 16 boys and girls received their First Communion. The Prelate spoke about God’s gift of life through the Eucharist and encouraged attendees to embody this gift through self-giving love. An English Mass concluded the day’s celebrations at 11:00 a.m.

The Feast of the Holy Rosary at Bandel Basilica was an inspiring experience for all involved—infused with Mary’s faith and surrender. As attendees departed following a final hymn dedicated to Our Lady, they carried with them renewed faith and an invigorated sense of community solidarity.
The historic Bandel Shrine—over 422 years old—plays a vital role in nurturing pilgrims’ spiritual growth. Established in 1599 by Portuguese settlers and dedicated to Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, it houses the miraculous statue of Our Lady of Happy Voyage—an enduring symbol of faith for devotees and pilgrims alike. This sacred space continues to inspire countless hearts on their spiritual journeys.
