Readings: 1 Tim 6: 2-12; Lk 8:1-3
Today both readings invite us to give importance to spiritual values rather than material wealth. In the first reading, St. Paul cautions Timothy about the pitfall of pursuing wealth and the love of money. He advises Timothy to teach and encourage others to find contentment with what they have, as true wealth lies not in material possessions but in godliness. Paul’s words are as relevant today as they were in the context of the early church. The pursuit of wealth can easily become an all-consuming endeavour, leading individuals away from the path of righteousness and into moral and spiritual decay. It encourages believers to strive for qualities like faith, love, and endurance, which form the foundation of a purposeful and fulfilling life.
Today’s gospel reading describes how Jesus began his preaching and healing ministry in the company of the twelve Apostles and a group of women volunteers. These women were not just passive observers but active participants who used their resources to support the mission of Jesus and his disciples. They provided financial and practical support.
The example set by these women is a testament to the transformative power of selfless giving. Their actions remind us that material possessions are meant to be used to uplift and support others rather than merely for our personal enrichment. Just as they used their resources to advance Jesus mission, we too can use our talents, time, and wealth to spread his mission in this contemporary world.
