Readings: Am 7:10-17; Mt 9: 1-8
Today’s liturgy calls us to reflect on the theme “Called to be agents of Christ.” In the first reading, Amos prophesied to the people of Israel, urging them to return to God. In the gospel, Jesus exemplified his compassionate heart by healing a paralyzed man. Jesus valued the faith and care of the friends who brought the paralytic to him, not only restoring his physical health but also forgiving his sins, demonstrating his authority as the Son of God. Despite this, some scribes accused Jesus of blasphemy, asserting that only God can forgive sins.
However, Jesus clarified his authority over diseases, spirits, and the forgiveness of sins. As Pope Francis said, “Jesus teaches us another way: Go out. Go out and share your testimony, go out and interact with your brothers, go out and share, go out and ask. Become the Word in body as well as spirit.”
Often, we seek God’s grace for healing or strength without addressing the root causes of our problems. Yet, as St. Teresa of Calcutta affirmed, “I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world.” Through prayer, like the steadfast prayers of St. Augustine’s mother, God can effect profound transformation in our lives. Let us walk with Jesus and help others draw closer to him through our actions and prayers.
