West Bengal Bishops Reignite Vatican II Spirit Through Synodal Path

Verghese V Joseph –

Raiganj, West Bengal: The Bengal Regional Bishops’ Council (BRBC) hosted a week-long workshop from May 13-17, 2024 on the synodal documents and the constitutions of the Second Vatican Council. The event, titled “Pilgrims of Hope on the Synodal Journey”, brought together a diverse group of representatives including bishops, priests, religious, laypeople, and youth from the Bengal Region.

The workshop aimed to reignite the spirit of Vatican II within the context of the ongoing synodal process in the Catholic Church. Participants delved into the synodal documents and the four constitutions of Vatican II, discovering a renewed emphasis on collaborative listening and discernment.

“By engaging with these important texts, we’ve found that synodality aligns perfectly with the call for active participation by the People of God outlined in Lumen Gentium,” said Most Rev. Thomas D’Souza, Chairman of the BRBC and one of the convenors of the event.

The discussions highlighted the relevance of the Vatican II constitutions in the Bengal context. Gaudium et Spes, with its message of engagement with the world, was seen as a reminder to listen attentively to the joys and struggles of local communities, which is at the heart of the synodal process.

“We are leaving this workshop ignited with a renewed zeal for synodality,” said Most Rev. Vincent Aind, Archbishop of Ranchi and co-convenor of the event. “We are now equipped to share the spirit of collaborative listening and discernment in our dioceses, fostering open dialogues within our parishes and reaching out to all voices, especially those on the margins.”

The workshop also served as a training ground for participants to become agents of synodality in their respective communities. As trainers, they will share their knowledge and ignite a spirit of listening and dialogue, while also animating the preparations and celebrations for the upcoming Jubilee 2025.

The final statement of the workshop outlined a set of calls to action for the Jubilee celebrations, emphasizing the importance of community engagement, reconciliation, and a renewed commitment to the Church’s mission.

The gathering’s call to action hovered around:

  • Plan and Organize: Begin by forming a dedicated committee or task force responsible for planning and organizing the Jubilee 2025 celebrations, ensuring representation from all relevant stakeholders.
  • Set Goals and Objectives: Define clear goals and objectives for the Jubilee celebrations, outlining what you hope to achieve spiritually, socially, and communally during this special time.
  • Engage the Community: Involve the entire community in the planning process, seeking input and feedback to ensure that the Jubilee celebrations reflect the hopes, dreams, and needs of all members.
  • Develop a Program of Events: Create a diverse program of events and activities that cater to different interests and demographics within the community, including spiritual retreats, service projects, cultural performances, and educational seminars.
  • Promote Participation: Encourage active participation in Jubilee events and activities by providing opportunities for volunteering, leadership roles, and personal reflection.
  • Embrace Reconciliation and Healing: Use the Jubilee as an opportunity to promote reconciliation and healing within the community, addressing past wounds and divisions with a spirit of forgiveness and compassion.
  • Reach Out to Marginalized Groups: Ensure that Jubilee celebrations are inclusive and welcoming to all members of the community, especially those who may feel marginalized or excluded.
  • Celebrate Milestones and Achievements: Take time to reflect on and celebrate the milestones and achievements of the community over the past years, acknowledging the blessings and challenges that have shaped its journey.
  • Share Stories and Memories: Create opportunities for community members to share their stories and memories of faith, hope, and resilience, building a sense of unity and connection across generations.
  • Commit to Renewal and Mission: As the Jubilee celebrations end, recommit to the mission and values that define the community, pledging to continue the journey of faith and service with renewed vigour and purpose.

The Conference of Catholic Bishops of India’s Jubilee Yātra to the Bengal Region has been a significant step in the synodal journey, equipping the Church in Bengal with the tools and inspiration to build a more inclusive, participatory, and mission-oriented community.

One comment

  1. It’s a good initiative of Bishops, clergy, religious and laity (People of God) combine to take a renewed interest and introspect on the Vatican-II documents. It will be a great service if BRBC gets these documents translated in local vernaculars (at least in Bengali, Hindi, Santhali and Nepali) of Bengal.

The above report does not mention the venue of the BRBC conference, the main resource person(s), improvement of the socio-economic situation of the grassroots faithful in Bengal and the significance of Jubilee Yatra 2025.
