The call of the twelve apostles raises a curiosity for us because Jesus chose the persons who, according to this world, are least important to society, simple and ordinary people. Such is the mysterious plan of God.
The call is for all categories of people. It indicates that for Jesus everyone is important and that nobody is insignificant in the sight of God. Jesus calls the unworthy to make them worthy; he calls them for a particular mission. The call of God is “sow for yourselves in justice, and reap in the mouth of mercy, break up your fallow ground: but the time to seek the Lord is, when he shall come that shall teach you justice.” This we see in the first reading of the day. God invites everyone for his mission. Jesus gave the apostles authority, the power to do his ministry.
Imagine what we would be capable of doing if we all offer our everyday, our every effort, to do God’s work. We will have a better world, a more peaceful world where the weak will not be taken advantage of by the strong, the helpless not oppressed, the sick not abandoned. Let us come to the realisation of our call and work for a better world.
