The normal tendency of humans is to choose the easier way rather than the difficult one. Most often we are attracted to the outward appearance rather than the inner quality of a person or thing. A good conclusion or right decision is made when we choose a difficult way and look inward. In spirituality, there are two selves involved: physical self and spiritual self which is involved in making right decisions or good conclusions. These two selves are explained in today’s readings.
In the first reading, we read about prophet Jeremiah, who shows the movement from denial to acceptance. He talks about the persecution he had to endure in proclamation, with a fire in his heart which holds him strong. Here we know how his spiritual self holds him strong even in persecution. In the second reading, we read about offering one’s physical body as a holy sacrifice and discovering the will of God in the spiritual body which brings perfection. Here we know less importance is given to the body than the will of God which is spiritual.
In the Gospel reading, Jesus rebukes Peter who acted physically at the prophesy of Jesus’ death. And Jesus extends an invitation to act spiritually by taking up one’s cross and by self-denial. In other words, this highlights the importance of accepting one’s difficulties and working hard for success by leaving aside the worries of the self. Our attitude and the ability to accept difficulties take more priority than success itself. So, let us cultivate an attitude of acceptance and ability to work hard towards building a stronger society.
